MAKO Spearguns Yamamoto Y45 Freedive Wetsuit

This MAKO - Yamamoto Y45 Freedive wetsuit was designed with input from top freediver around the world and is produced in cooperation with Yamamoto of Japan, featuring the Yamamoto #45 open cell neoprene. This neoprene is used by more World Champion Freedivers and Freedive Instructors than any other neoprene in the world and now it's available for all freedivers at a very affordable "MAKO DIRECT" price.

Known for its amazing warmth and incredible flexibility, this Yamamoto #45 neoprene wetsuit is complemented by the most stretchy and durable outer material produced. We call it Yamamoto "Mega Stretch” and nothing else compares to the stretch and durability offered by this exciting new material.

Why is stretch so important? Ask accomplished freedivers and freedive instructors and all will say the same thing. A great freedive suit has NO restriction of movement in any part of your body. This is equally true for the arms, legs and shoulders, as it is for the lower, middle, and upper portions of the abdomen and chest. As soon as you put this suit on, you will feel how much better you can expand your chest cavity and move your arms and legs with absolutely no resistance from your Y45 suit.

By combining valuable input from accomplished freedivers, with the very best Yamamoto #45 neoprene and Mega Stretch outer material, we can say with certainty, this freedive suit is the best of the best.

We at MAKO Spearguns want to express our sincere thanks to Yamamoto of Japan and our freedive instructor friends who have helped us develop such a remarkable suit. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to offer such a great freedive wetsuit to the freediving community. And, we stand committed to our customers with our “100% customer satisfaction guarantee”, our “commitment to unprecedented customer service” and our “Buy Direct from MAKO Price Guarantee”.

MAKO Yamamoto Y45 Freedive Suit Specifications:

  • Yamamoto 45 Neoprene: The most preferred open cell neoprene by the top freedivers in the world
  • Yamamoto Mega Stretch: Outer material offers the most stretch and durability over any other material
  • Raglan sleeve: This is a huge improvement over lesser quality suits that have tubular style arms. The Raglan Sleeve is a much more ergonomic and contoured cut which offers significantly increased comfort and range of movement for the arms
  • 2 pc suit (Jacket and Pants): Jacket includes integrated hood with face seal, and wrist seals. High waist pants include ankle seals. The seals on the face, wrists and ankles eliminate water flowing throughout the suit, so you stay warm and comfortable

Available in 3mm or 5mm

Our wetsuits are certified by Tomizo Yamamoto (President of YAMAMOTO Corporation) and me (Dano Krahling, President of MAKO Spearguns) to be Genuine YAMAMOTO Neoprene.

Genuine YAMAMOTO Neoprene Certificate

NOTE: As you can see, these suits do not have the chest loading pad and knee pads found on our spearfishing suits. All of our freedive friends tell us they cause too much drag and add too much buoyancy. Although the Y45 suits are made primarily for pure freediving, we do offer an optional “short sleeve rashguard with chest loading pad” in case you would like to hunt for some dinner after a day of line diving.

NOTE: This is an open cell suit. All quality freedive suits must be treated with an extra level of care, particularly when putting the suit on and off. This means you must lube the inside of the suit and lube your body with a solution of non petroleum based hair conditioner. The more the better. Do not try to put this suit on without first lubing.

We recommend " Suit Slide" a scent free, non petroleum based lubricant designed for Spearfishermen. Once applied, putting on an open cell suit (unlined) is actually faster than putting on a closed cell (lined) suit.

Also, check out Suit Fresh - the first product to clean, remove odors and condition your suit all in one. It is made with organic ingredients. It eliminates odors, uric acids, sweat, salts and sunscreen. EZ sprayer to make cleaning wetsuits fast, effective and easy. Suit FRESH does not require pre-mixing or a multiple step cleaning process.

    Even fits the bigger guys

Posted by Nicholai on Dec 13th 2019

I am 6' tall and a bit of a thicc boi at 220lb. I decided to go with the XL and I am loving it. The Yamamoto Neoprene is very stretchy and is very comfortable around my belly. I took an entry level freediving class with this suit and it did not restrict my breathing at all! I love this wetsuit

    Fantastic fit and comfort

Posted by Kevin on Jun 15th 2017

I recently completed a level two course and this wetsuit contributed to my success. I am 5'9 , 170 pounds and the medium large fit like a second skin without being too tight around the neck. And it was no big deal putting on the open cell suit with the suit slick. If you are borderline on the size choice I recomend going with the larger size. There was no water intrusion into the suit. Others wearing traditional suits got eTen up by sealice. The Mako suit kept them out.

    Great freediving suit

Posted by Jon Bachman on Mar 7th 2017

I'm really impressed with this wetsuit. It's all I could have hoped for, and of course, it was at a great price. The construction was impeccable with blind stitching and reinforcements on the seams under the arms. It's at least as stretchy as my prior suit, which was also Yamamoto 45, but that one was a competition suit and did not have an outer fabric facing. Given the fabric outer and reinforcements I expect my new suit will last a lot longer. The one odd thing about the suit was that it had a large face opening on the hood. With my old suit my chin was usually covered. On the Mako suit my chin was usually exposed. Not a big deal, but just a design difference I guess. I was also concerned about the proper size to order, but Brad gave me great advice and the large fit me perfectly. I'm 6'1" and 180 lbs.

    Great Suit

Posted by Brian on Feb 22nd 2017

This is my first free diving suit and first purchase from Mako, and I must say I'm very pleased with the suit. It fits true to the chart, is very flexible, very comfortable and surprisingly warm. I've already done several 3+ hour sessions with it and didn't even begin to get cold. I used it in a PFI Intermediate Freediver class and it performed flawlessly the entire time. Looking forward to getting it in the water again soon. Thanks Dano!

I love my 5mm wetsuit. My buddy and I both got one at the same time and we are both thrilled with them in every way. I'm ordering a 3mm soon. Medium Large fits me perfectly being 5'9 168lbs.

    nice suit

Posted by freediver on Mar 28th 2016

Nice fit, and price is right! It may be made better with a little more attention to details (e.g. glue dots on corners where parts of neoprene joined, better stitching), but overall, it is a very nice suit, I am happy with it.

    Yamamoto Y45 Freedive Wetsuits (Mens)

Posted by Scott on Sep 30th 2015

I was a little nervous purchasing the suit without first trying it on, but this ML fits very, very well. I'm 5' 11 1/2" and approx 165 lbs. 31" waist, longer torso, and somewhat wider shoulders. The suit did arrive with a very minor tear inside (it didn't go all the way through) but open cell neoprene is so fragile that I didn't begrudge it too much. Some of the neoprene stuck together during shipping and it might have torn due to that. Over all, i am very happy with the suit, particularly for the price.
